Very rarely am I desperately trying to beat material so I can sit down and write a guide for it, but it’s hard to explain how to actually beat the toughest boss of the Elden Ring, Melania, as a mage , I actually had to beat him first.
Well, after a few hours of trial and error between last night and this morning, I’ve got it done. And I’ll share how I did it with you, because once I figured out a few things, it got a lot easier.
So, I’m a mage, and while the Melania fight is tough for anyone, it’s especially for someone who has to be cast-up and where most of their spells make her blink like they’re nothing Huh.
Here are the main components of my kit, most of which you’ll find the result of a queen quest at some point:
Black Knife Teach (bring her here,– This is one of the best summons in the game and a perfect counter to Melania. She’ll dodge well enough so that Melania doesn’t auto-feed health from her hits, and her Cursed Blade move will do significant DPS and offset a lot of her healing.
Greenburst Crystal Tear (get it here, – Boosts recovery of stamina in mixed physique
magic shroud torn tears (get it here, – Increases magic damage in mixed physique
Bloodhound’s Step (get it here, – It was necessary. I should have used it a long time ago, but I put it on a pair of claws, and it allows you to Enough Dodge most of Melania’s attacks, even her craziest attacks, for a small amount of FP. I don’t think I could have beat it without it. Make sure you’ve got your staff on hand so you can actually use it on whatever you put in. I had it on my toes.
Carrion Regal Scepter (get it here, – This is my max Scepter which does bonus damage to my Dark Moons.
Primal Glintstone Blade (get it here, – This reduces the FP cost for health for more moon spam.
Ritual Shield Talisman ,get it here, – It reduces damage when you have full health which is great for chunking of Melania.
Cerulean Amber Medallion +2 ,get it here, – Big FP Boost
Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2 (get it here, – Major physical damage reduction, as all of Melania’s damage is physical, although if you get caught in a combo, nothing will save you.
6 crimson, 8 cerulean potions – It was the distribution that I did, didn’t really determine one way or another.
Snow Witch Hat (get it here, – Gives 10% bonus to cold spells (My Dark Moon). The rest of your armor doesn’t really matter but I had a moderate load.
Queen’s Dark Moon (get it here, – This was the first step I spammed.
Comet Azure (get it here,– This was the major phase 2 mantra.
Terra Magica (get it here, – This is what I put down at the beginning to shoot the moon for a big damage boost.
Step 1 Strategy:
Enter, summon Tiche, drink Physique, cast Terra Magica, start spamming Dark Moon. On a good run, Tiche will continue to damage him and knock him down as you shoot him through the moons. On a bad run she’ll spam her waterfowl dance move and you’ll have to boogie the Bloodhound step to avoid it as much as possible. Try and make sure you proceed to step 2 with a full heart.
Step 2 Strategy:
As you lay the egg, hold off, run to Melania to be directly under her (I know, it’s less crazy than it sounds), then turn right and keep going. He should remember you with both feet of this move.
Drink the mana potion if you have it, unleash Comet Azure and hold down the button (you can also use Physique eliminating FP here as an alternative strategy). It will burn through Malenia when it has been frozen for a while after its flowering.
Essentially you want to dodge (mostly using the Bloodhound step) until he swells again, which he should do when you’ve turned him down to decently low health. You can make the Bloodhound step sideways on repeat to dodge all clones of one of his attacks. I didn’t learn his pattern for his advanced waterfowl dance and was lucky he didn’t have time to use it during my win.
Hopefully she pops up again in short order and you dodge her the same way, and hit another comet Azure in the same way, which should be enough to kill her. Alternatively, if she’s going after Tiche, you might have good luck throwing some moons, but you really don’t want to give her time to fix either of you. Comet Azure is the main trick here because I don’t think you alone will be able to avoid spamming moons for long unless you’ve pulled off some really crazy defensive dodges.
And there you have it, I beat him. This was easily the toughest fight in the game by a factor of ten. I think the most I’ve died on any boss before this is probably 7-8 times on one of the Cosmic Centipedes. Here? It was easy 30-40 attempts. But it is possible! And if I can do it (I’m not very good) you can do it with your wizard too. just do not give up!
